What a resource this Handbook is! 84 pages of detailed information for the 2008-2010 Festival pieces. Easy to read layout includes every piece’s time signature, tempo, number of measures,
key signature, a brief description of the piece, pedagogical tips, and a difficulty rating. (This is the author’s opinion of how hard the piece is in relation to the other pieces at the level. For
example, all Moderately Difficult 2 pieces are ranked against each other, but not against MD3 or Medium.) There are boxes after each piece for teacher notes, student names, or as a guide to
the 3 year cycle.
As an added bonus, there is an index in the back of the handbook detailing non-American composer nationalities. This is worth the price alone as a continuing resource to find this data in one
accessible source.
“In 1999, I took a transfer student with points toward a trophy in a festival I knew nothing about. Frustrated that more of the music was not readily available, I learned all the pieces in the
bulletin, and put together note cards describing each one. With each new bulletin, the system has grown and developed. I decided that a handbook for myself and anyone else who might find
value in it was needed.”
